Glasswing Dominican Republic

In spite of having one of the fastest growing economies in Latin America, the Dominican Republic still faces significant challenges stemming from inequality, with 35.8% of Dominicans living in poverty and another 7.9% living in extreme poverty. Poverty and inequality continue to affect the lives of Dominicans, mainly children and adolescents living in marginal urban and rural poor areas of the country’s main provinces and the border area.

While there have been improvements in life expectancy, years of schooling, and GNI per capita, social spending in the Dominican Republic remains low when compared to the rest of the region; an average of 1.6 percent of GDP is set aside for health in comparison to a region’s 4.5 percent average.

Since 2014, Glasswing Dominican Republic has maintained a presence in three public schools in Santo Domingo and Santiago de los Caballeros through the Samsung Smart School program. Programmatic work has recently expanded to reach three additional public schools through a partnership with Hanes Brand Inc., as well as the launch of English for Tomorrow, an intensive English-language and customer service program in two public schools.
