Glasswing Mexico

Although Mexico has the 11th largest economy in the world, almost half of its population — 55.3 million people (46.2%) — lives in poverty. School dropout rates and low quality education put Mexico at serious disadvantages. In 2018, a study by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography showed that two out of every 100 children between 6 and 11 years old, and 16.2% of children between 12 and 17 years old, do not attend school. The dropout rate in the 2019-2020 school year reached 2,525,330 pre-school, primary and secondary school students, and 305,089 university students due to COVID-19.

Violence experienced by children and adolescents is also a growing factor. Child labor statistics show that 15.7% of children aged 6 to 14 work, and according to UNICEF data in 2015, Mexico ranks first in bullying cases worldwide.

Since 2016, Glasswing has been carrying out projects in Mexico, and the first office in Mexico opened in 2019. Glasswing Mexico implements education programs that seek to strengthen community. Since July 2019, more than 3,000 children have actively participated in educational programs in six public schools and more than 273 volunteers have participated to achieve this change together.

Glasswing Mexico works closely with six migrant shelters in Tijuana, Baja California to strengthen mental health by training staff in self-care techniques and restorative practices, while also helping them integrate trauma-informed care and techniques directly into their work.
