Glasswing Honduras

In recent years, Honduras has registered the second highest economic growth rates in Central America, behind only Panama and well above the average in Latin America and the Caribbean. However, the country faces high levels of poverty and inequality. 48.3% of people live in poverty in Honduras and the percentage of people living in poverty in rural areas (60.1%) is higher than those living in poverty in urban areas (38.4%).

In addition, Honduras struggles with high levels of violence, with over 38 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants (2018). Moreover, Honduras is vastly exposed to adverse natural events and climate change, especially heavy rainfalls and droughts that occur regularly and disproportionately affect the poor. In November 2020, Hurricanes Eta and Iota affected approximately 4.7 million people.

In 2020, the educational crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, lack of economic resources, lack of opportunities, migration, and insecurity have caused more than 44% of children between the ages of 3 and 17 (2.2 million) to be left out of the educational system. Approximately 29% of young people in Honduras neither work nor attend school, and around 62.8% of the economically active population is underemployed. Studies indicate that in an effort to improve economic opportunities for Hondurans, access to quality education for children and youth is vital.

Since 2011, Glasswing Honduras has partnered with multiple organizations to bring education, health, community empowerment, and employment programs to thousands of community members. In 2020, Glasswing Honduras began the Sanando Heridas program, training national police, 911 responders, and healthcare providers to provide trauma-informed care to survivors of violence. Through “Sanando Heridas”, Glasswing has formed alliances with local organizations that attend to returning migrant children.
